if you are working in a small or medium sized team (I would say no more than 10 people) that may not be all in the same pyhsical location then you should definately be using 37signals campfire.

It makes chat simple, nothing to install, signup is fast and easy (you can even setup a free account for up to 4 people).

All in all it’s a very effective, low tech groupware app
